In a first of its kind mass wedding, 15 couples from the transgender community tied the knot on Saturday. The event, which was organised by a Raipur-based transgender and social activist Vidya Rajput, took place in Chhattisgarh.
The event witnessed the marriage of couples from Chhattisgarh as well as other states. The procession was carried out in a traditional Hindu style and also included pre-wedding rituals like- Haldi, Mehendi, Engagement and Sangeet.
Ms Madhu Kinnar, a transgender and the mayor of Raigarh who attended the event, said, “This should have happened a long time ago because we transgenders don’t have anybody to share out joys and sorrows. Nobody understands our sorrows. Today the government has given us such a good scheme and has given us an opportunity to get married. I thank them profusely.”
She further said, “We are getting life partners, what can be better news than this?”
