Rivers are the lifelines of any country. However, when it comes to Indian rivers, what is the first image that comes to your mind? Lifelines that look more like drains. Be it our most famous rivers like Ganga or Yamuna, or a small one in your neighbourhood, chances are they are in a very sorry state. And we are so used to them that it doesn’t really matter to us, does it?

But the river ‘Umngot’ in North-eastern state of Meghalaya is an exception to this common understanding of our rivers. Flowing through the Jaintia Hills district, the crystal-clear river is located on the India-Bangladesh border.

Umngot is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful images in the country. But thanks to lesser media exposure, is has maintained its sanctity and clarity. The water of Umngot river is almost completely transparent, and you can easily see the marine life in the water.

As the river flows through already picturesque location of Meghalaya, its beauty is only enhanced. Boating in this clear water and watching colourful fish swimming inside it is an experience that one cannot explain in words. You have to feel it yourself to understand!

That said, if you wish to reach this location, you can take public trasnsport from Barabazar in Shillong to Dawki in Jaintia Hills district. Buses are the cheapest and easily available modes of transportation to Dawki, which is 70 km from Shillong.

If you plan to visit the place, or have already been there, make sure to let us know in the comments about your experiences.
