Before we jump into the dreadful scenario of how, plastic is piling up and affecting our earth, let’s find out what is “Plastic Pollution” in brief.
Plastic pollution, is the accumulation of plastic objects such as plastic bags, plastic water bottles, and any other plastic item in the earth’s environment and affecting it negatively. It doesn’t stop there, Plastic is made from toxic pollutants which can harm the environment, in the form of air, land and water pollution. This creates a problem, not just for plants and animals, but humans as well. There is no doubt that Plastic, is a very useful material but, it comes with a cost… A Hefty one!
There was a time, when the amount of plastic produced was very small. The plastic waste from the 1950s to 1970s was pretty manageable. This amount of plastic production and plastic waste generation was doubled by the 1990s. And in the 2000s, Plastic waste that generated in just one decade was even more than the amount produced in the past 40 years put-together.
Now, we are producing more than 300 million tons of plastic every year, which is nearly equivalent to the weight of the entire human population. Nearly 50% of this plastic is for single-use purpose, which means that this plastic is thrown away after it is used just Once. The amount of plastic that is dumped into our oceans is more than 8 million tons every year.
Another staggering fact is that an estimated 8.3 billion tons of plastic have been produced since the 1950s and only 9% of it has been recycled till date.
Whoa! The addiction to this cheap and versatile plastic has brought us upfront to a major environmental crisis. And that’s why, when our Prime Minister Narendra Modi is urging us to Shun Single-Use Plastic, it’s time we took this very seriously, What do you think?
